Visiting the Cemetery

By FOMHC Team

“I recently visited this wonderful cemetery and I can reassure you that the memories of the folk buried there are so respectfully recorded. This is such a peaceful and welcoming place and all of the previous residents are remembered, recorded and respected. It truly is a tribute to them.”

“The weather looked a bit iffy yesterday afternoon, but we still decided to go to Wells as next week will be the last Sunday that Mendip Hospital Cemetery gardens will be open.

We were not disappointed as just a few short miles up the road, the sun was shining.

As always, a warm and friendly greeting and chat with Pete and the other volunteers.

The gardens were far less pink than our last visit and the flowers had been replaced with seed fluff.

The deep purple buddleias were surrounded by flutterbys, dancing around the flowers before landing for a feed and the pond was being guarded by a very large blue and green dragonfly.

As on our last visit the gardens were a welcome oasis of peace and calm, even though we had a non stop talking five year old with us.

He seemed to really enjoy himself as well and asked numerous questions as we walked about.

I think the highlight for him was being able to pick an apple from the tree and eat it.”

“Wow my Sister Hazel Revis & I had such a wonderful visit with you today. We found where Lily Gullick is buried & are so grateful to you for all your help. We met some lovely visitors there including Maria the Spanish lady. We met 3 lovely ladies in the grounds checking different plants & grasses & the Son of one of them had assisted in locating the buried iron grave markers! Volunteer Clare knew who we were searching for straight away & described her perfectly. Oh boy what a mind full of information too. She even gave us a hand drawn map to locate the actual Hospital now converted into housing/apartments which we found with ease! One homeowner invited us in to show us the original features of his house. When we lost our way another homeowner took us through his garden to The Fire Engine Cottage. What a wonderful but exciting & emotional day we have had. The cemetery is so well kept by all the Volunteers & we would urge anyone thinking of visiting to put it to the top of their Priority List. We are so happy to have actually found the resting place of our 2nd cousin 3 x removed. RIP now Lilian Mary Gullick
